About the Brigadier Boinett Foundation

The Brigadier Boinett Foundation (BBF) is a community-driven organisation dedicated to advancing sustainable development through three interconnected pillars: Education, Environment, and Culture. These pillars guide every programme and partnership, ensuring that our interventions are not only impactful today but create lasting change for future generations.

Our work is rooted in the belief that thriving communities depend on access to quality learning, a healthy environment, and a strong sense of cultural identity. By integrating these elements, BBF delivers solutions that are both practical and transformative β€” empowering individuals while strengthening the systems that support them.

BBF operates primarily in three counties across Kenya: Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, and Kwale β€” from highland ecosystems to coastal environments, each with unique opportunities and challenges.

A key strength of the Foundation lies in its close collaboration with its sister company, The Private Collections, a hospitality group that manages distinctive destinations including Poa Place Resort, Naivasha Kongoni Lodge, Wileli House, and Swahili House. This relationship creates a model where conservation, community development, and hospitality intersect, enabling deep and sustained place-based impact.

Brigadier (Rtd) Wilson Boinett

Founder, Brigadier Boinett Foundation

Raised in a family facing financial hardship, education was a luxury for the young Wilson Boinett β€” until a good Samaritan secured him a bursary that covered six years of schooling. That singular act of generosity changed the trajectory of his life.

His military career began in 1972. Over the following decades, he rose through the ranks to become Aid-de-Camp to the President and later Chief of Military Intelligence. His international service included peacekeeping missions in Zimbabwe and Mozambique and advisory roles in peace processes in Chad.

In 1999, he led the reforms that transformed the Special Branch of the police into the National Intelligence Service (NIS), serving as its Director-General until his retirement in 2006.

In that same year, Brigadier Boinett donated land in Eldoret and inaugurated the Eldoret Animal Sanctuary β€” officially opened by Ole Kaparo, then Speaker of the National Assembly. Inspired by the belief that access to Kenya's natural heritage should never be limited to the few, he established the Brigadier Boinett Foundation with a mission to make conservation, culture, and education accessible to all.

"Today, what began as a sanctuary has grown into a multi-county foundation reaching tens of thousands of Kenyans each year β€” and the work is still just beginning."
